Looking to cut traveling costs, many visitors are opting for the more affordable permits in Uganda and DR Congo. This 4 days package is designed to cater for those clients who might find Rwanda’s permits beyond their budget but still wish to go trek both mountain gorillas and Mount Karisimbi. The tour takes visitors to trek mount Karisimbi in Rwanda from Kigali and then do mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi impenetrable forest park in Uganda. Day 1: Kigali City tour – transfer to volcanoes national park
After breakfast, a guide/driver from Mission Africa Safaris will be waiting to pick you up from your hotel. The guide will brief you and share details about the 4 days tour. You will then go out to tour the city of Kigali. The city of Kigali allows you witness the transformation that has taken place in Rwanda since the horrific genocide in 1994. The city is developing at a fast rate, is organized and neat with beautiful green surrounding hills. You will also visit one of the genocide war memorial sites before going out shopping for local crafts and souvenirs. You will have lunch at Hotel Rwanda in Kigali before heading out for the three hour journey to the volcanoes national park. While on the road to the park, be on the lookout for Rwanda’s amazing countryside with rolling hills, green tea plantations and smiling locals. You will have dinner and sleep at either Mountain gorilla view lodge (Luxury) or the Da Vinci lodge (Midrange).
Day 2: Mount Karisimbi Hiking
Wake up to sumptuous breakfast and be driven to the Kinigi park headquarters for registration at around 9am. Along with other Hikers, you will be assigned guides and then taken to the starting point of the Hike. While at the starting point, you will be briefed once again on the rules and regulations of hiking. Hiking Mount Karisimbi starts at 10am and remember to come with packed lunch from your hotel. Dinner on top of the volcanoes can be arranged but remember to bring your walking stick, drinking water, hiking and camping gear. A camp will be set midway the climb where you will have dinner before resting for the night.
Day 3: Reach the summit and descend down the volcano – transfer to Bwindi
You will be woken up by singing birds to take early morning breakfast and then continue the climb to the summit of mount Karisimbi. The view on top of the summit is simply breathtaking for lack of a better word. Your persistence will be rewarded with an overview of stunning landscape and vegetation. On one hand you will see the wider Virunga ranges with lush green forest and on the other hand a clear view of mount Mount Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira in the DR Congo. After these amazing sights, it’s time to go down. You will descend, have lunch and rest before embarking on another journey to one of Uganda’s top tourist destinations – Bwindi impenetrable forest. Dinner and Overnight at Mahogany Springs Lodge (Luxury), Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge (Mid-range) and Buhoma Community Rest Camp (Budget).
Day 4: Gorilla trekking and transfer to Kigali for departure
Wake up very early to great breakfast and ensure you have packed lunch arranged by the lodge. Our guide will take you to the park offices for registration and briefing. There are 11 habituated gorilla families in Bwindi forest park. You will be assigned a gorilla family depending on your overall fitness and preference. Mountain Gorilla tracking takes anywhere between 30 minutes to 8 hours depending on the gorilla family and their location that day. If you wish to hire a porter to help with extra luggage, request for one at a fee of about 10USD. Afterwards begin the tracking as you follow the ranges. Mountain gorilla tracking is the ultimate wildlife experience. Once you meet these amazing creatures, take as many photos as you can. Follow the instructions of the wardens and guides. Security and safety while with mountain gorillas and at Bwindi impenetrable forest park is guaranteed. You will only be allowed one hour with the gorillas. After all is done, head back to the camp and to the lodge to checkout and travel back to Kigali.
