The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund
Primate conservation is not transformed by sentiment alone. It takes personal action, funding, structures, institutions, facilities and permanent field systems to turn ideals into function. The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is a perfect example of how action by individuals and organizations can contribute to wildlife Conservation. Set in Rwanda’s northern corridor, the Ellen DeGeneres Campus represents a shift in African primate conservation from temporary field stations to 
long-term ecological infrastructure. The Campus was opened in 2022 and built with support from the Ellen DeGeneres Fund and Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. The campus is now the largest permanent facility dedicated to Mountain gorilla conservation on the continent. It’s the central base for all operations of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in Rwanda.
The Ellen DeGeneres Campus aims to build regional capacity, conduct long-term research and support one of Africa’s most successful conservation efforts. The Campus is positioned close to a major park which is perfect for real-time collaboration with Rangers and Trackers monitoring Africa’s most famous primates. This positioning is excellent for students enrolled in conservation programs who desire academic theory alongside field observation.
History and Function of the Ellen DeGeneres Campus
Planning for the Ellen DeGeneres Campus started as early as 2017. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund assessed the limitations of its field office in Musanze. They concluded that the existing facilities had become constrained for effective ecological monitoring, research training and education. There was a need for a modern and purpose-built campus. This assessment by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund gained international support in 2018 especially through The Ellen Fund. This fund was established by Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi. The Ellen Fund pledged to avail funds for constructing the Campus while the Rwandan Government allocated land for the facility in Kinigi.
The location of the Campus was selected because of its operational proximity to the Volcanoes National Park. This park is home to more than one-third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The park already had existing conservation operations and the necessary infrastructure to support the project. The location of the Ellen DeGeneres Center was thought to be ideal because it lies within the Virunga Massif. The Virunga Massif is a famous wildlife conservation corridor that brings together famous Researchers dedicated to ecological monitoring and also anti-poaching efforts.
Construction of the Ellen DeGeneres Center commenced in February 2019 and was led by the MASS Design Group which is well-known for conservation-oriented architectural projects. The MASS Design Group worked with over 2,000 local workers. Work remained on schedule despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The campus was inaugurated during a colorful ceremony in February 2022. The Attendance included Political leaders, conservation Agencies, Officials from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International and the Ellen Fund.
The Ellen DeGeneres Campus has now replaced the former offices of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund operations in Kinigi. The Campus is a hub for student training, research data processing, ecological fieldwork and world-class conservation projects. The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund supports anti-poaching efforts, primate habitat monitoring, ecological data gathering and Youth education across Rwanda’s northern districts. The broader ambition of The Ellen DeGeneres Campus is to consolidate knowledge, protect habitats and train the next generation of conservationists. This ambition is not limited to Rwanda, but in all areas where wild gorillas can be found in the African continent.
How the Ellen DeGeneres Campus Functions
The Ellen DeGeneres Campus is a modern facility that was designed for efficiency. It has modern power and Internet systems that operate independently. The Campus also has modern data storage and 
archiving systems. Transport and other logistics support systems are housed in adjacent buildings to support more than 90 full-time staff working within the campus. These include ecologists, veterinarians, program managers, logistics officers and community educators. Operations continue smoothly because housing is available on-site for visiting researchers and staff. From the Campus, staff coordinate field logistics, conduct research, deliver conservation education while also monitoring gorilla conservation programs.
Each morning, tracking teams report to the field coordination unit to receive assignments. Their tasks can range from observing gorilla groups in Rwanda, recording vegetation patterns and inspecting forest boundaries. The date gathered from the field is returned to the campus and processed by research staff. Field data is fed into established systems that are designed for monitoring the population of mountain gorillas within the Volcanoes National Park and beyond.
The Ellen DeGeneres Campus has a central control room that oversees daily coordination of work with Park Officials. Whenever an issue arises that requires rapid response, such as changes in gorilla group behavior or signs of poaching, the Campus serves as the first point of contact.
The Ellen DeGeneres Campus partners with local institutions such as the University of Rwanda to train students studying environmental science, ecology and biology. Instructions are delivered through field observation, classrooms and analysis from the available labs. The Campus supports about 150 students every year on average. These students come from across the globe but the majority are citizens of Rwanda.
How the Ellen DeGeneres Campus has Contributed to Gorilla Conservation
Applied Research: As noted earlier, the campus collects field-based research reproductive patterns, habitat conditions, stress indicators and reproductive patterns. Findings and data collected are shared with the Rwanda Development Board, other wildlife conservations Agencies, the public, academic institutions, and international databases for comparative analysis.
Monitoring Gorillas: The Ellen DeGeneres Campus manages all gorilla monitoring operations linked to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. These monitoring operations include collecting data on gorilla group health and movements. At the end of the day, reports are compiled and logged into the main database to be used for decision making or planning purposes.
Medical Responses: The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund works closely with Gorilla Doctors at the Ellen DeGeneres Centre. Gorilla Doctors help provide medical care to sick gorillas in the wild. They work in all countries with wild gorillas including Uganda, Congo, West and Central Africa. The Gorilla Doctors take advantage of the laboratory facilities housed at the Campus for testing samples got from the field. This ensures that there is faster diagnosis without having to take these samples in foreign laboratories. Staff at the campus help with treatment of primates in the park while also providing transportation, communication devices and other equipment.
How to Visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus – Entrance Fee, Distance and Location from Kigali
The Ellen DeGeneres Campus welcomes tourists but on a regulated basis to maintain focus on conservation activities. There are designated areas within the campus for educational access and under the guidance of trained staff. These designated spaces support learning, community engagement and awareness.
Many Tourist visit the Campus before or after completing gorilla trekking at the Volcanoes National Park. All Visitors are received at the Interpretive Centre. While here, Visitors are presented with an overview of the work done at the Campus. Tourists get to learn about the work of Dian Fossey, gorilla ecology and the history of primate conservation in Africa. After listening to the presentations, Tourists are taken to see archival footages, primate displays and ecological data visuals. While at the Campus, Tourist should expect to see university students, local school groups and other delegations visiting the Campus.
What is the Entrance fee to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus? There is no entrance fee to The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. However, donations are accepted to support projects related to gorilla conservation. It is important to book any visit to the Campus in advance because walk-in visitation may not always be possible. All bookings for academic outreach activities are handled by the Administrative wing of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in coordination with the Rwanda’s Ministry of Education. Those who cannot visit the Campus can also register for their remote learning programs.
How can once access the Ellen DeGeneres Campus? It takes 3 hours of driving to get to the Campus from Kigali International Airport. The Ellen DeGeneres Campus is found in Kinigi which is part of Musanze District in Rwanda’s Northern Province. The road infrastructure between Kigali and Musanze is paved and well-maintained.
